Investigation into Wolston Park & Accessing Records

I was thrilled last week with the news that Shannon Fentiman, MP Minister for Health, Qld announced an investigation into Wolston Park from 1950s to 1990s, into allegations of sexual abuse, patient abuse, chemical restraints, and the incarceration of people in locked wards who didn’t have mental illnesses. She also gave me an opportunity to meet her to present the case for a truth commission, and detail my brother’s abominable treatment in the Hospital.

My brother Randall Carrington was transferred to Pearce House a forensic ward for convicted violent criminals and he’d not been convicted of any offence. He was abused, drugged and raped repeatedly. Just a kid off his head on gold top mushrooms who got lost in the bush.

How to apply for your deceased relatives’ records from Wolston Park

Since the announcement, I’ve been asked how I gained access to my brother’s medical records from Woltson Park Hospital. I was denied access by the Health Department, then appealed to the Information Commissioner through Right to Information (RTI). You can click here to access the information from the Office of the Information Commissioner. To access the Qld RTI on-line form click here.

You can also access the information from Qld Health about how to apply. Hopefully by now they have made it easier following the announcement of the investigation.

When I met with the Minister Shannon Fentiman recently, she said if anyone has difficulty with accessing their relatives’ records to contact her office.

  1. Thankyou, my deepest heartfelt gratitude to you for advocating for and providing this opportunity for justice finally for our loved ones. I am so overwhelmed emotionally at this time to read this. I imagine the healing that may occur now for myself and my daughter – that my mothers’ traumatised life, incarcerated against her will…and the loss of her 11-13 children. The resultant intergenerational trauma and suffering that occurred due to the misdiagnosed, mistreatment and abuse she endured alongside your beloved brother and so many others, over so many many years at Wacol, Wolston Park brings me to tears as I write this. I send my sincerest respect, thanks and much loving kindness to you and your family from myself and mine. Thankyou. Dee Baker
